WASHINGTON -- More than 1,600 U.S. active duty military personnel and reservists are calling for the withdrawal of troops from Iraq, The New York Times reports.
The service members have sent an "Appeal for Redress" to their congressional representatives that reads: "As a patriotic American proud to serve the nation in uniform, I respectfully urge my political leaders in Congress to support the prompt withdrawal of all American military forces and bases from Iraq. Staying in Iraq will not work and is not worth the price. It is time for U.S. troops to come home."
Most of those who signed the appeal are enlisted soldiers in the Army.
The protest was started last fall by two active-duty service members who say they support the military, but believe it is their "right and duty under the Constitution to question the war and its mission," the newspaper said.
