Dear DFLers,
The President wants Congress to make sure that phone companies that helped him illegally spy on innocent Americans are never held accountable. So Bush and his allies have put lots of pressure on House Democrats—using press releases and attack ads to accuse them of undermining our security.1
But this time, Speaker Pelosi and other Democrats have been pushing back. Rep. Chris Van Hollen responded to attacks by saying, "We have seen what happens when the president uses fear-mongering to stampede Congress into making bad decisions. That's why we went to war in Iraq."2
Still, this morning's Washington Post reports that Democratic leadership is being pushed to capitulate by the Administration and some conservative Democrats.3
A vote on accountability could come as early as tomorrow, so Democrats need to hear from us right away. Can you call Rep. Walz? Tell him: "Democrats must keep standing up to Bush and opposing immunity for illegal spying. Voters will support them."

This fight is so important because if the phone companies are given immunity for their lawbreaking, we might never find out how far the Administration went in violating our liberties. Here's how the New York Times put it:
"Mr. Bush says without amnesty, the government won't get cooperation in the future. We don't buy it. The real aim is to make sure the full story of the illegal wiretapping never comes out in court."4
Bush and his corporate friends want their crimes covered up. Until that happens, they'll keep threatening Democrats with more attack ads that paint them as weak on national security.
Democrats need to hear from voters that defending America means protecting our Constitution and our basic liberties—and that we'll support them when they fight back against this fear-mongering. Please call your Representative today.
Thanks for all you do,
