Walz: Fundraising Request

Dear Friend,

I write you today from the front lines of one of the most competitive Congressional elections in the country. I need your financial help today to keep our campaign competitive and, come November, move our country back on the right track.

The upcoming June 30th filing deadline is the most important deadline our campaign has experienced. Last quarter, we out-raised the incumbent – one of only twelve challengers to do so – and I’m certain that his big business supporters and the Republican administration will not let that happen twice. To stay competitive with my opponent and his war chest I must raise another $50,000 this week – a daunting, but not impossible task.

I am proud that most of our contributions are of $25 or less – they come from the hard-working people of southern Minnesota. I am also honored that the labor unions that represent the people of the 1st district have endorsed me and donated because they see that we have a strong chance of success in November.

With Election Day just over four months away, the eyes and ears of the country are turning towards Minnesota’s 1st Congressional District. Voters and journalists alike realize southern Minnesota is a bellwether for the political shift ready to sweep the country in November. But we can’t do it without you and your support right now.

Because of the buzz you’ve helped create, our campaign has been the focus of several national media features, including a recent piece on Military.com with an accompanying podcast. Just this past week, the hot Twin Cities weekly paper, City Pages did a three page spread about us, reviving my title as “The Republican Nightmare.” You can read the entire article at http://citypages.com/databank/27/1333/article14453 or in the latest issue of City Pages.

But media coverage today isn’t enough. We need your financial donation if we’re going to keep the buzz going through November 7th. If we can raise another $50,000 before June 30th, the importance of this election and the strength of this campaign will be undeniable. On June 21st, Minnesota’s beloved Garrison Keillor hosted an event at his home to show his support for our campaign. The event was a huge success but it didn’t take long for the Republican smear machine to try and turn the occasion into an attack against me, putting out a press release the very next day that labeled Keillor an “angry liberal”, out of touch with Minnesota values.

The next four and a half months are going to be full of this same type of empty, partisan mudslinging. That’s why we need your help. Both local and national Republicans realize, just as we do, how important this race is. When we win, it’ll be a crushing blow to politics as usual, and it will provide real representation to the people of southern Minnesota.

In the coming months my opponent and his friends will call me names, spin the truth and do just about anything else they can to avoid talking about the issues. I’m asking for your help now so we have the funds in the crucial days of this campaign to contrast my Minnesota values with my opponent’s Washington actions, and to force an honest debate on the issues. I firmly believe that if we have the opportunity to present my values to the people of southern Minnesota, they’ll make the right choice.
