WALZ POSTPONES IRAQ TRIP TO ASSIST WITH FLOOD RESPONSE EFFORTS

08/20/2007

Winona, MN-Congressman Tim Walz (D-MN) was scheduled to travel to Iraq and Afghanistan today on a congressional delegation trip.

Because of the catastrophic flooding in southeastern Minnesota, he has indefinitely postponed the journey and will remain in Minnesota to assist with the response efforts.

He released the following statement:

"After witnessing the extent of the devastation in southeastern Minnesota yesterday and today, my heart goes out to all those who have been affected by this calamity. The communities in this area face serious challenges, both in the short- and long-run. It's important that all federal and state authorities be present to ensure cooperation and quick action. I still intend to travel to Iraq to gather information and learn from service members on the ground, but because of the emergency in southeastern Minnesota, I have postponed the trip indefinitely."
