Walz Wire - October 2007
10/23/2007
Congressman Tim Walz Supports Children’s Health InsurancePresident Bush’s recent veto of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program, or SCHIP, left countless child advocacy organizations stunned. Just last week Congressman Walz wrote about his strong support of SCHIP and urged his colleagues to override the President’s veto in the Minneapolis Star Tribune on October 18, 2007.
Congressman Walz writes “SCHIP was created 10 years ago to help provide health care for children whose parents earn too much to qualify for Medicaid but not enough to afford private insurance. The program is economical -- it needs less than $3.50 a day to cover a child -- and cost-effective, because children who have access to routine preventive care from a family doctor don't have to rely on emergency rooms for their medical care.” We encourage you to check out the full editorial on the Star Tribune website by clicking here.
Congressman Walz Holds 3 Town Hall Meetings on the War in Iraq
Changing course in Iraq remains a priority for voters of the First Congressional District. Congressman Walz hosted three town hall meetings in the last two weeks to discuss the current situation in Iraq and allow constituents to voice their concern about this pressing issue. Check out the Winona Daily News for some of the latest news coverage of these important events.
Congressman Walz Leads the Fight for National Guard Educational Benefits
Minnesota National Guard soldiers spent more than 22 months serving their country overseas, requiring many to put their college educations on hold. Upon their return, the U.S. Army initially denied our soldiers full benefits of the historic GI Bill because they had served one day short of the 730 required days. Congressman Tim Walz stood by our soldiers and not only demanded they receive full benefits, but that the U.S. Army provide enough clerical support to ensure our soldiers can continue their college education this January.
