“WWIII Is Coming” says Bush

10/18/2007

Paul Munnis

Bush has warned us of the possibility of WWIII if Iran goes nuclear.

His fix? You guessed it – bomb them guys. In other words start WWIII so as to prevent WWIII.

That is the kind of bad logic that Bush has advanced ever since he came to office and now he’s dishing up more of it packaged as fear-mongering.

Here is an alternative to the Bush prescription:

Go the UN with a concern that a nuclear Iran would be a major threat to world peace.

Ask the UN to help design and participate in an international effort to change the dynamics and to help avoid war.

That would mean a major diplomatic effort is needed by the U.S.

It would also mean an economic effort as a corollary.

Those efforts need not be a mean spirited bullying approach by Mr. Bush. They could instead be an open minded, good faith effort to bring peace where there is now hostility and benefit where there is now only sanction.

Such an effort would be totally outside the mind-set and the scope of a Bush Administration though. They prefer arm twisting and intimidation to negotiation and compromise. The Bushies paint compromise as “weak” but I paint it as “wise” and if we are good negotiators as buying more for us in the long-run in terms of extended opportunities for trade and commerce.

What I am hoping for is that Israel and Palestine continue constructive efforts to achieve peace in the mid-east. I want the U.S. to end our involvement in Iraq and I hope that we soon wrap it up in Afghanistan. I want America to resolve our differences with Iran and contain Syria and Lebanon while getting Egypt to play a more significant role in the mid-east as a peace broker. As the pressure comes off the mid-east I seek regional tranquility and a future of hope for the people of the region.

Meanwhile at home we need to be working overtime to end our dependence upon mid-eastern oil and we need to turn our sights to both Central and South America seeking a co-prosperity sphere with the nations of that region.

We should leave Russia for the Europeans to deal with and we should become best friends with Canada.

That is my prescription and vision for foreign a policy and I say it is a far better one than Bush is offering with his “first strike” and other such nonsense policies.

If you want to enjoy good neighbors then begin by being one yourself.
