The Republican backdoor power grab

DFLers -

Republicans can't win elections based on their failed philosophies, so, they've latched onto a new plan: make it as hard and expensive as possible for people to exercise their constitutionally protected right to vote.

Since the Supreme Court decided two weeks ago to uphold a draconian law in Indiana that requires citizens show a government issued photo ID to vote, Republican legislatures across the country have started moving fast to pass their own version of this horrible law.

And just like the poll taxes and literacy tests of the past, Republicans hide their real purpose under the banner of preventing possible voter fraud. But these laws are really about stopping senior citizen, low income, and newly registered Americans from voting. Why? Because they typically vote for Democrats.

We must stand together and protect every American's right to vote.

SIGN THE PETITION NOW
http://democracyforamerica.com/action/righttovote

Already 19 states are rushing to pass anti-voting laws. And just this week, Missouri Republicans started taking it a step further. A photo ID isn't good enough; they want you to show your birth certificate or passport in the polling booth too.

What's next? Require a blood sample? Maybe a lock of hair? Or some of your DNA?

Republicans claim this is about national security. They have no proof, but illegal immigrants might be trying to vote. On the other hand, just last week in Indiana's primary, as many as 12 nuns were denied their right to vote because they didn't have government issued photo-ids. That’s right; evidently Republican's are protecting our democracy from our biggest threat: nuns without ids.

Together, we have the power to stop this assault on our right to vote.

TAKE ACTION AND SIGN THE PETITION NOW
http://democracyforamerica.com/action/righttovote

This is just the beginning. We will deliver the petition to elected Democrats in legislatures around the country. Armed with the support of the nation behind them, they'll have the power to stand up to this Republican backdoor power grab.

Together, we are building a coalition to beat anti-voter laws in Missouri and beyond. And in the days ahead, we'll demand Governors in every state make their position public. Will they side with the American people and protect our sacred right to vote or will they help George Bush and Republicans lead an assault on our democracy?

With your help, we will defend American freedom and protect the right to vote. Thank you for everything you do.

Wednesday, May 28, 2008

8:30-5:00

Cowles Auditorium
Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs
University of Minnesota

Registration required, $25 to attend

Hosted by the Center for Science, Technology and Public Policy, and the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, with principal financial support from 3M.

As fuel prices skyrocket and the costs of carbon emissions and other pollution increase, the win-win of moving Minnesota's economy to a more sustainable foundation gets ever more clear. Greener technologies promise new jobs, as well as new markets for everyone from farmers to high tech businesses. At the same time, the concept of "green chemistry" is gaining strength, nationally and internationally. Simply put, green chemistry means coming up with consumer and commercial products and ways of making them that will intentionally reduce or eliminate toxic substances altogether. And, because Green Chemistry's core principles also include energy efficiency and waste reduction, these approaches often result in significant savings going straight to a manufacturer's bottom line.

Minnesota is beautifully positioned to help lead the nation into this sustainable, Green Chemistry future. Its intellectual resources include leading companies and learning centers in medicine, medical products, research and development, renewable fuels, engineering and manufacturing. And, of course, Minnesota's rural economy remains vital, with enormous potential for growing renewable feedstocks based on Minnesota crops that could help replace our intensive use of imported fossil fuels, not only as fuels but as building blocks for plastics, building materials and other products.

This conference will bring together researchers, teachers, business leaders, farmers, advocates and policy makers from around the state to discuss the opportunities and challenges for Minnesota to become a leader in green chemistry, in green engineering and in this more sustainable future. We will ask members of business, academia and public policy what specifically their organizations could contribute to advancing this future, and what help they need from other sectors to reach their goals.

The program also will include:
A video conversation with three national experts:

Terry Collins, Ph.D, Director, Institute for Green Science, Carnegie Mellon University, and first professor to offer a course in Green Chemistry

Paul T. Anastas, Ph. D., Director, Center for Green Chemistry and Green Engineering, Yale University, and green chemistry pioneer

John Warner, Ph.D., Director, Center for Green Chemistry, University of Massachusetts-Lowell, and founder of the world’s first Green Chemistry Ph.D. program
- Hear from David Wallinga, MD, MPA, Director of the Food and Health Program, Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy about the opportunity for a “triple win” for Minnesota
The registration deadline is May 23rd

Dear DFLers,

After tonight's tremendous victory here in West Virginia, it's clear that the pundits declaring this race over have it all wrong. The voters in West Virginia spoke loud and clear -- they want this contest to go on.

I'm listening to the voters -- and to you.

With your help, I'm going to carry the energy of tonight's victory into the next contests in Kentucky and Oregon. And just as always, I'll be depending on you to share every step of this journey with me. You have worked your heart out, put yourself on the line for what you believe in, and given generously. And I'm not about to turn my back on you.

We've proved conventional wisdom wrong time and again in this race. We did it again tonight in West Virginia. Let's keep going.

Thank you,
Dear DFLers,

The West Virginia primary is just a few days away, and we need you on the phones!

Hillary is within striking distance of winning the popular vote nationwide -- a key part of our plan to win the nomination. That means we need every last vote we can get in West Virginia on Tuesday and in the races to follow.

Nothing is more effective at helping Hillary get out the vote than the calls you make. When a voter hears directly from you why you're supporting Hillary, that person is much more likely to go to the polls on Election Day and choose her.

Our calls into Indiana made the difference in that race, and you can make the difference for Hillary today. So sign up today to use our simple calling tool and help Hillary win!
Thank you so much for your continuing support of Hillary. It means so much to me to know there are so many people fighting with us.

Hello DFLers,

One of my oldest friends in the progressive movement always had a saying to describe how he took stock of people: he said it wasn't whether you were liberal or conservative, it's whether you were a "stand-up person." He meant that it mattered what you did when the chips were down, the positions you took not when it was easy, but when it was really hard.

Now, a true stand-up guy -- my colleague Senator Frank Lautenberg -- is facing a primary challenge for re-election. Let me tell you -- I'll do everything in my power to help re-elect Frank Lautenberg because he's a true progressive who has been with us when the chips were down.

Frank Lautenberg always shows up for the fight and he speaks his mind. In 2004, when a lot of people were having a hard time separating fact from fiction about the military service of politicians, Frank stood on the floor of the Senate and said, "We know who the chicken hawks are. They talk tough on national defense and military issues and cast aspersions on others. When it was their turn to serve where were they? AWOL, that's where they were."

Well, when it's been Frank's turn to show up and fight, he's always been there -- and I mean he's been there in difficult times. Back in June of 2006, it seemed like no one wanted to come within a mile of legislation Russ Feingold and I introduced to set a deadline to bring our combat troops home from Iraq. Only eleven brave Democrats stood with us and voted for an end to the Bush Iraq policy.

Frank Lautenberg was one of them.

It's not the only time. When I led that filibuster against drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Frank signed on -- and spoke out on the Senate floor.

When Ted Kennedy and I filibustered Judge Alito's nomination for the Supreme Court, Frank didn't take a pass just because Alito was from New Jersey -- he stood up to that pressure to stick with a home state nominee -- and he did what was right -- filibustering Alito.

Frank Lautenberg is, in short, one of the very best progressive Senators we have. And he needs our help. Please donate what you can to his campaign:

http://www.actblue.com/page/jkforlautenberg

Frank is locked in a primary battle and he's fighting his heart out -- fighting the only way he knows how.

Born in Paterson, NJ to parents who immigrated through Ellis Island, Frank has had to fight every step of the way -- working nights and weekends in high school to help his family make ends meet, serving our country in World War II, building a business, and coming to the Senate to be a voice for people, not the big powerful interests that already have plenty of "representation."

The Senate needs progressive warriors like Frank Lautenberg. People who show up when it counts and fight 'til the bell rings.

So please do what you can to keep him in the Senate:

http://www.actblue.com/page/jkforlautenberg

If we work hard, we can build a real working progressive majority in the Senate for 2009. But we need to keep our great progressive Senators in there in order to bring the real change we need to our country.

Thanks,
John Kerry
NY Times Letters
Published: May 5, 2008

TRD Ed. Note: David Brooks is a Conservative op-ed editorial voice for the NY Times and he often writes things of real interest. His latest editorial in the NY Times has stirred up some interesting thoughts from NY Times readers.

Op-Ed Columnist: The Cognitive Age (May 2, 2008)

David Brooks (“The Cognitive Age,” column, May 2) is right that it is really technological change that is driving the loss of middle-class jobs.

Education is a valuable tool for managing this problem. But it is important to recognize that technological change is continuing, and at some point during this century education will no longer be an adequate response.

We will have to face up to a fundamental change in the way we distribute the benefits of the increased productivity created by technology.

Bill Hibbard
Stoughton, Wis., May 2, 2008

•

To the Editor:

David Brooks notes the obvious: “Globalization is real and important.” He points out that “employers now require fewer but more highly skilled workers,” but does not address the question, What happens to everyone else?

The great lie of pro-globalizationists is that losing semiskilled jobs frees Americans (and other educated people) to do more rewarding and higher-level occupations. But I have yet to encounter a pro-globalizationist who can state exactly what these jobs are.

We are not all going to be engineers, accountants or information systems specialists, and the great neglected duty that our evolving society has failed to address is that since we need fewer and more skilled workers, what happens to the average and mediocre?

The answer seems clear. The great American working-class success story was simply a pinpoint on the timeline of history. It’s over.

Steven Johnson
Redondo Beach, Calif., May 2, 2008

•

To the Editor:

David Brooks may be right about the “skills revolution” and how we are “moving into a more demanding cognitive age.” But what life will be left for Americans doing other kinds of work, work that does not disappear because of developments in information processing?

Are we just to deny, without a fight, the ability to “thrive” to people doing farm labor, day care, transportation, construction, food service, machine repair, printing, manufacturing, craft work, garbage collection, fishing, ranching, horticulture and on and on?

Jeff Zorn
San Francisco, May 2, 2008

•

To the Editor:

It is seldom that one reads a column that changes one’s mind, but “The Cognitive Age” did that for me.

As one vocally opposed to globalization for 30 years, I have now come to believe that like it or not, it is here to stay, and we had better get used to it.

The candidates would be doing us all a favor if they would offer suggestions about how to maximize the economic benefit of globalization rather than dwelling on its perceived shortcomings.

Ned Welker
Prescott, Ariz., May 2, 2008

•

To the Editor:

David Brooks doesn’t mention the most important issue causing all the trouble as we move toward a global economy: a level playing field.

Intelligent Democrats aren’t pumping up xenophobia, and they’re not pandering to the electorate. They’re just calling for fair play in the marketplace.

The problems we face now could be mitigated if the Bush administration had the gumption to stand up to the governments that refuse to play on a level field.

China, for example, has never played fair with its trading partners. In my industry, the recording business, the Chinese have repeatedly denied the existence of pirate CD and DVD factories in their country, even in the face of evidence that American intellectual property is being stolen.

John Boylan
Los Angeles, May 2, 2008

•

To the Editor:

David Brooks is right: the global economy is driven by technological change. One should add that the third industrial revolution will start when we accept that technology can solve the energy crisis.

Whichever nation decides to cover its roofs with solar shingles and use inexhaustible and free solar energy to convert sea water into hydrogen fuel for its cars will not only provide a permanent solution, but will also initiate the economic boom of the century.

Political leaders should not use the gasoline cost for pandering or preparing for energy wars. No, our political leaders should return the United States to its natural role of leading the technological transformation of the planet.

Dear DFLer,

Our campaign is continuously building support among DFL delegates and alternates who will ultimately determine who is endorsed as our DFL candidate for U.S. Senate. We are picking up new delegate votes each day and are incredibly excited about our building momentum!

As a grassroots campaign, every day and night Jack's volunteers are having conversations with the DFLers who will meet this June in Rochester to endorse our DFL candidate for U.S. Senate.

This week Jack continues working hard, meeting with delegates and alternates around the state. He is listening to our concerns and hopes for the future of Minnesota. This week his travels included Winona, Rushford, Owatonna, Mankato, Marshall, Ada, White Earth, and Thief River Falls.

Last night, Jack held a Meet and Greet for State Delegates in Minneapolis. It was exciting to hear a state delegate tell her story about changing her support, and becoming a delegate for Jack. Hers is one of a growing number of delegates and alternates who have been studying the candidates, listening to them, and deciding on Jack as the person they know will bring hope and courage to the U.S. Senate.

We may be seeing you already at one of the many upcoming meet and greets, or at the CD2 or CD8 conventions this weekend, but we encourage you to tune into Almanac tonight at 7:00 p.m. on Public Television to hear more from Jack himself!

We look forward to seeing you on the campaign trail!

P.S. March with the Jack Team at the May Day Parade this Sunday! Though the event takes place in Minneapolis, it draws people from around the state. We will be meeting at noon at Cedar Park. Please contact Jennifer at volunteering@jackforsenate.org or 612-216-4665 with questions.

Marathon vs. Sprint

{summary}

      <dc:subject>Letter to Editor</dc:subject>

Dear Editor,

There’s a reason why campaigns are called “races”: some are like sprints, some are like marathons. Today I’m asking you to join me in the marathon.

We’re all familiar with the sprint campaign: the mad dash of volunteers running as fast as they can, night and day, to get their candidate first past the post. Nothing in politics is more exciting than a campaign in sprint mode.

But marathon campaigns are just as critical. Marathoners are out steadily pounding the pavement long before Election Day — and still pounding it the day after Election Day. (Well, two days after. wink ) As a marathoner myself, I know that what you need for a solid race isn’t bursts of sporadic energy, but a constant, steady supply.

Today I’m asking you to keep the DFL Party competitive in the marathon by joining the DFL Sustaining Club. Campaigns come and go, but the DFL Party is on the ground 24 / 7 / 366 — talking to Minnesotans; spreading our message; and building the solid infrastructure that will sustain the DFL values of opportunity, prosperity, accountability, and fair play for the long run.

As a Sustaining Club member, your regular, monthly contribution will ensure the steady flow of resources that we need to build the base for our long-term success, regardless of which races are on the ballot in any given year. Memberships start as low as $25 per month, billed directly to your credit card, and come with a variety of benefits for Club members only — including tickets to events, special receptions, and behind-the-scenes briefings.

When you join the DFL Sustaining Club, you keep us in the race not just until November, but for the long haul. When you keep us racing in the marathon, you make it possible for us to take advantage of every opportunity to move Minnesota forward.

Sincerely,

Brian Melendez
Chair
Minnesota DFL Party

P.S. Remember: the State of Minnesota will refund the first $50 of your contribution ($100 for a couple) from the Political Contribution Refund program. Join the Sustaining Club today and get your first $50 right back.
<dc:subject>Letter to Editor</dc:subject>

Dear Editor,

Senator Obama wants to close out this race before every American has a say, but you and I have a different idea -- and so do millions of Americans headed to the polls in the next few weeks.

This race isn't decided yet, no matter what the Obama campaign would like you to think. After our big win in Pennsylvania, more Americans have voted for me than for any other candidate. And just next week, we've got races in North Carolina (where Governor Mike Easley endorsed me yesterday) and Indiana (where we're in a tight race right next door to Senator Obama's home state).

But before those big races on May 6, we're facing a critical deadline. Tonight at midnight, we close the books on our April fundraising -- and the number we report has the power to shape the story of this election. I can't put it any stronger than this: every dollar we bring in by midnight tonight can make the difference in this race.

That's why some of my active supporters have agreed to match contributions from new donors made before the midnight deadline. And because your contribution is matched, it's worth twice as much -- every $25 gift is worth $50. Even a $5 gift is twice as valuable. If you've never made a gift online, there will never be a better time than right now.

Contribute before our midnight deadline, and your gift is worth twice as much.

Over the course of this campaign, I have relied on you and hundreds of thousands of people just like you. Your time, your hard work, your generosity, and your heart have all sustained me through the ups and downs of this incredible journey.

Some people, including my opponent, would like to declare this race over. They want you and me to just give up. Why? Because every time they think we're out of it we come roaring back -- and now we have a clear path to victory.

Our first step on this path is to show that our campaign is as strong as it has ever been. We have until midnight tonight to get every dollar in the door before our April fundraising deadline. And if you give before midnight tonight, your gift is doubled thanks to our matching program.

Double your impact and help us win by contributing before the midnight deadline.

I want to thank you for your personal and powerful involvement in this race. It makes such a difference to me to know you're a part of our campaign.

Sincerely,

Hillary Rodham Clinton

John Kerry: Fight the right-wing smear machine

{summary}

      <dc:subject>Letter to Editor</dc:subject>

Hello Minnesota DFLers,

If what you're seeing feels familiar, it probably is.

Last week the maker of the Willie Horton ad released a new ad targeting Barack Obama.

John McCain tried to paint Democrats as the choice of Hamas.

A right-wing front group called 'Defense of Democracies' released an ad targeting specific House Democrats, claiming they had laid the country open to attack just because they had the patriotism and guts to stand up to the President's illegal wiretapping.

And we've all seen the "ad" the GOP is running in North Carolina which John McCain "denounces" but says he's helpless to stop. (And yes, the familiarity there is more than eerie.)

You know I've been through this before, and we learned the hard way how instantaneously and aggressively you have to act to stop smears dead in their tracks. Now, we can bemoan the areas we've fallen short doing this in the past, or we can fight back against every attempt by the right to smear Democrats. I've made my choice -- I'm committed to defending Democrats up and down the ballot -- and across the country -- against smears, and I'm dedicating my organization, Campaign For Our Country, to doing it. But I can't do it without your help.

I mean that literally -- not figuratively -- the success of this mission is up to you. Please give $20, $50, or $100 today to take the fight to the right-wing smear machine:

http://www.actblue.com/page/stopthesmears

Make no mistake - no matter who the nominee of our party is, the right-wing is going to go after Democrats with the most despicable smears you can imagine. It's only going to get worse. The right wing knows that Americans won't vote for John McCain and the rest of the GOP on the issues, so they are going to try to take the politics of Karl Rove to a new low, with a national campaign of fear and smear. We can't depend on others to filter out the lies and the smears, we need to do it ourselves.

With your help, we can do that. But we need to put as many resources behind the truth as they put behind a lie, so please give what you can to help:

http://www.actblue.com/page/stopthesmears

As part of this effort, we are building an innovative website where activists from around the country can track, debunk, and fight against the smears. We'll be able to know -- in real-time -- what the right-wing is up-to and where. And we'll be able to work together to get the truth out. Empowering activists to fight for the truth -- because I know how effective all of you can be when you have the tools to fight with -- is the way we can beat the smears.

We may not be able to line up the billionaire tycoons of the right-wing to fund a multitude of front-groups, but we have something better than that: we have you. The johnkerry.com community stepped up to the plate and helped end the GOP control of Congress, and now we have the next step we need to take. We must expand our majorities, capture the White House, and put our country on the path to a real progressive governing majority.

We can do it, but we need your help to fight back against the smear machine of the right. Please give what you can.

Thank you so much for your support.

Sincerely,
John Kerry

Dear DFLers,

This high school student is the future governor of Minnesota, but doesn't know it yet.

Someone is about to attend Camp Wellstone for High School Students (May 9th and 10th in St. Paul), and get the skills they need to get started in campaign organizing. After the training, they'll cut their teeth volunteering on a progressive campaign in Minnesota this election year, and after that, a lifetime of progressive activism and eventually a run for office.

Sponsor a high school student today!

Who knows who the future progressive leaders of our state will be? Young people are engaged like never before this election year - that's why we need your help now to channel that energy into building a corps of skilled young campaign organizers.

Wellstone Action is charging almost nothing for this training to give as many young people as possible the chance to get trained. $75 will cover the cost of a student's participation. Give $75 today to sponsor a student to attend Camp Wellstone for High School Students!

Your sponsorship allows more young people, and maybe even the future governor (or senator, or school board member...), to get skills and leadership development in campaign organizing.

Thanks for your commitment,

Jeff Blodgett, Executive Director
Wellstone Action!

P.S. - Every little bit helps! Give today to provide high school students with leadership development opportunities!

Hillary Clinton: Counted out

Dear DFLers,

After being outspent and counted out, we are on the path to victory thanks to the voters of Pennsylvania and your steadfast support.

Every day, I see the effects that your support has on our campaign. When I visit one of our offices in the field and see a full phone bank buzzing with activity, I know people like you make it possible. And when I celebrate a victory like the one we had in Pennsylvania, I know we are celebrating together.

We can keep celebrating victories all the way through November. Our next step on the road to the nomination is a big show of strength when we report our April fundraising numbers. Because of the incredible support we saw last week, we are in position to make sure every voter has the right to be heard in this race.

There is no better way to get us closer to victory than to make a contribution right now. That's why a group of our most active supporters have agreed to match new online contributions -- meaning any gift you give before the midnight Wednesday deadline will go twice as far toward helping us win.

This is a unique opportunity, the chance to be part of something big. Matched with one of our donors, your $25 gift is worth $50. Your $50 gift is worth $100. There's never been a better time to jump in and help move our campaign forward -- don't miss this opportunity to make a gift worth twice as much.

Contribute now, before the midnight deadline, to make sure your gift is matched.

Think about everything that you and I have fought for together. Think about the enormous change we'll bring if we win. We can do it -- victory is in sight. But first we need to make a big show of strength by raising every dollar we can before the midnight Wednesday deadline. Let's show everyone who wants to count you and me out that we are in this race to win it.

And since some of our best supporters are matching your online contribution, your gift before the deadline is worth double.

Contribute to help us show our campaign's strength, and your gift will be worth twice as much.

This is a critical moment in our campaign. We have the momentum heading into the final primaries, and I know we can win if we keep working and fighting together. Thank you for everything.

Sincerely,
Hillary Rodham Clinton

Dear Editor,

We need veterans like Ashwin Madia, Tim Walz, and Leonard Boswell in Congress to lead us out of Iraq and to support our troops. Click here to donate to their campaigns today!

It's no surprise that a war veteran, Senator Jim Webb, has led the fight in expanding the GI Bill to give our troops the education benefits they were promised. Those who have worn the uniform know first-hand how much our troops have sacrificed and what it takes to support members of the armed forces.

That's why it was critical our community helped elect Jim Webb in 2006, and it's also the reason I'm backing three veterans who are running for Congress this fall. Though 30,000 Americans have signed a petition in support of Senator Webb's GI Bill, our opponents are already weakening the bill because it is too "generous" for our troops. We need more veterans in Congress who will help bring our soldiers home from Iraq and stand up for those who have defended our nation.

Join me and support veteran candidates Ashwin Madia, Tim Walz, and Leonard Boswell by donating to their campaigns today!

http://www.actblue.com/page/3vets

Ashwin Madia

Ashwin Madia is running in Minnesota's 3rd Congressional district, and his candidacy presents a prime opportunity for Democrats to pick up this open seat. As an Iraq War veteran, Ashwin Madia knows as well as anyone the importance of getting our troops out of Iraq and safely home. He spent seven months in Iraq, working with U.S. officials, European Union and United Nations representatives, and Iraqi judicial officers to strengthen the Iraqi criminal justice system.

Ashwin's extensive experience in Iraq would bring a needed perspective on our nation's interests in the Middle East. We need his voice in Congress, and with your early support he'll win this fall.

Help send Ashwin to Congress -- click on the link below to donate to his campaign today!

http://www.actblue.com/page/3vets

Tim Walz

Two years ago, Representative Tim Walz defeated a six term incumbent Republican in Minnesota's 1st Congressional District. As a 24-year member of the Army National Guard, Tim understands the need to increase education benefits for our soldiers and has co-sponsored the House version of Senator Webb's GI Bill.

But Karl Rove and the National Republican Congressional Committee have named Tim as a top target for 2008. Already, well-funded special interest groups have launched misleading TV ads against Congressman Walz because he continues to stand up to the Bush Administration and its failed policies.

Help Tim Walz fight against the GOP's attacks and win a second term. Donate to his campaign today!

http://www.actblue.com/page/3vets

Leonard Boswell

In 2006, WesPAC helped Leonard Boswell fight off a "swiftboat" attempt on him in Iowa, and our efforts helped re-elect Leonard. As a 20-year veteran of the Army, he too supports an expanded GI Bill for our veterans and has pushed for increases in funding for the Department of Veterans Affairs.

We can't afford to lose a true American hero like Leonard in Congress, and we can't take it for granted that the right-wing won't smear him again this November. Help re-elect Congressman Boswell by donating to his campaign now!

http://www.actblue.com/page/3vets

The insight of those who serve in the armed forces is too often lost in our nation's dialogue about foreign policy, health care, education, and veterans issues. With your support, we'll strengthen the voices of those who have risked their lives for our country by sending 3 veterans to Congress in 2008.

Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,
Wes Clark

Support Ashwin, Tim, and Leonard Today!
Dear DFLers,

Yesterday, Governor Dean sent around our second national television ad.

It's one of the most powerful television spots Americans will see this year. It's simple, and it's brutally honest. It rocked the McCain campaign, because they know they'll spend the every day through November dealing with the fallout.

This is the ad the Republican National Committee is working around the clock to stop, even threatening legal action against television stations that air this spot. That's how worried about it they are.

If you haven't seen it yet, watch it now, and send it to everyone you know:

Dear Editor,

John McCain wants to stay in Iraq for 100 years. He's said it, and it's on tape.

But his campaign hates that he was caught. They've viciously attacked anyone who reminded the American people that he said it, including me. They've said that those who reference the 100 years comments are "deliberately misleading voters."

So we've taken John McCain's own words -- video of him saying that 100 years would be "fine with me" -- and made a TV ad. There's no confusion, no distortion, no misleading -- it's John McCain, on tape, for voters to judge on their own.

It's one of the most powerful political ads I've ever seen. It's devastating -- and the McCain campaign will spend the rest of the election trying to fight it.

You can watch it here:

http://www.democrats.org/IraqAd

This is our second ad of the presidential race. Last week I sent you the first -- another powerful ad about the economy.

But we're not relying on television ads to win back the White House. We're organizing everywhere -- including Minnesota -- and we have been for three years. We've invested heavily in the infrastructure that Barack or Hillary will need when the nomination is settled.

All of it -- from the new Iraq ad to the organizers in places like Ohio, Colorado, and Oregon -- costs money, and we need your help.

The McCain campaign thinks they're getting ahead. Senior McCain adviser Mark Salter recently said that Democrats should "take their time -- don't rush" when asked about our primary.

I think the race has been healthy -- we've had record turnout and thousands of new voters in states across the country. The excitement is unprecedented, and we'll have a fantastic nominee soon. But we have to run against John McCain now -- we can't afford to wait.

Make a contribution to help show the voters where John McCain stands on Iraq, and fund the organizers who are laying the ground work for Hillary or Barack:

http://www.democrats.org/IraqAd

Even if you can't contribute, make sure you send this ad to your friends and family. Every voter in the country deserves to see John McCain in his own words.

100 years may be fine with him, but it's not with the rest of us.

Thanks for your support,

Action Alert! Act Now to Increase State Minimum Wage

Dear Editor,

Act Now to Increase the State Minimum Wage!

300,000 Minnesotans make less then $8/hour; substantially less then poverty line. We envision a Minnesota where economic justice is a reality for everyone in Minnesota. A Minnesota where every family receives not just the bare minimum, but a real living wage. The Minnesota House is considering taking a giant step in that direction by increasing the state minimum wage from $6.15 an hour to $7.90 an hour.

Call your State Representative and ask them to vote yes on SF 875 to increase the state minimum wage. Please ask your Representative to oppose any amendment to establish a "tip penalty" which would create a lower minimum wage for servers, bartenders and other tipped workers. Act now, the minimum wage bill may be up for a full House vote on Thursday May 1st. Call your legislator today!

Click here to find out who your legislator is.

Then call Governor Pawlenty at 651-296-3391. Tell him to sign the minimum wage increase. Tell Pawlenty that a tip penalty unfairly targets food service workers who deserve fair wages for a fair day’s work; the same as everyone else.

Thanks,

Dear Friends,

I wanted to let you know that more right-wing money is being poured into southern Minnesota.

A group calling themselves “Frontiers of Freedom” is calling voters in southern Minnesota, TODAY!

The group is telling voters to urge me to support retroactive immunity for telecommunications companies that participated in the President’s illegal wiretapping program. They want me to cave in to the President’s demands.

Despite the pressure, I refuse to give these phone companies a free pass. I won’t let President Bush decide when he can break the law.

The National Republicans have turned on the spigot and right-wing money is pouring into the First Congressional District. I need your help to turn it off!

Stand with me today… contribute $10, $25, $75 or $100 right now and help get our positive message out.

On Saturday I accepted the First District endorsement from the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party. During my acceptance speech, I reminded them that we will choose to win this election using something other than divisive rhetoric and wedge issues. We will focus on coming together as a community and solving problems facing our country.

Despite our positive message, the National Republicans will continue their divisive and negative attacks to try to scare voters and win elections. They keep trying to use those tactics on me.

They have attacked me with television ads…

They have attacked me with radio commercials…

Today, they are calling voters and attacking me on the phone…

I will not cave on this issue, but they will continue to attack. Please stand with me today and help me pull the plug on their efforts by pouring our positive message across southern Minnesota!

Sincerely,

Congressman Tim Walz

P.S. As a 24 year member of the National Guard, I know first hand what it takes to keep this country safe. As a member of Congress, I take the responsibility of protecting citizens seriously.

P.S.S. This is just the beginning. Over the next seven months, we expect over a million dollars in misleading ads to be run in Southern Minnesota. We need your help today to ensure our message is heard by the voters in Southern Minnesota.

Dear DFLers,

First of all, I want to say thank you for the incredible boost you've given our campaign in the days since our big win in Pennsylvania. Everyone on the campaign is talking about what you did and how much it means to Hillary. I don't think I'm overstating the case to say that without your generous support, we would not be in a position to win.

There has been a lot of talk in the media about the negative tone of this campaign, and who is responsible for it. I strongly believe that Hillary, who is out on the stump every day talking about her solutions for America, is getting a totally unfair rap on this count. I wrote an op-ed in The Washington Post this morning about the double-standard we have faced.

On the one hand, it's perfectly decent for Obama to argue that only he has the virtue to bring change to Washington and that Clinton lacks the character and the commitment to do so. On the other hand, we are somehow hitting below the belt when we say that Clinton is the candidate best able to withstand the pressures of the presidency and do what's right for the American people, while leaving the decisions about Obama's preparedness to the voters.

Who made up those rules? And who would ever think they are fair?

I'd like you to read the whole article, and let me know what you think.

Help Me Make Every Day Earth Day

{summary}

      <dc:subject>Letter to Editor</dc:subject>

Dear Editor,

We’ve come a long way since the first Earth Day 38 years ago this week. Our air and water are cleaner, and we’ve learned that environmental stewardship can go hand-in-hand with economic growth.

But now we face the challenge of our generation: global climate change. And people are starting to understand the challenge. I hear about it from hunters across Minnesota who see the effect on our wetlands, and from businesses in Duluth who are concerned about falling water levels in Lake Superior.

The challenge is clear. But so is the opportunity: to create new jobs, new industries, and a new green economy. That’s why I introduced the American Renewable Energy Act. This bipartisan legislation would expand and extend tax incentives for investment in solar power, wind energy, and other forms of renewable energy.

These are the industries that will drive the new rural economy, the new clean energy economy. Just this winter, I visited a small, ten-person company in Starbuck, Minnesota where they make solar panels. (They even made me put on a hard hat and jump up and down on the panels to show how they resist hail damage!) They are at the forefront, addressing the challenges of climate change while seizing the opportunity to chart our new energy future.

They know that the time to act is now.

In just a few weeks, the Senate will take up landmark climate change legislation that would establish a cap-and-trade system to use efficient market forces to reduce greenhouse gas pollution. I was proud to write the first title of the bill, which would create a national registry to measure carbon emissions – a “carbon counter” -- because you can’t fix a problem if you can’t measure it.

It’s the first real action on climate change before the Congress in years.

Just like those employees in Starbuck, Minnesota, I want to lead the way on climate change – and we’re well on our way. And it’s precisely my work that is already making me powerful enemies.

There’s a reason climate change has never really been at the forefront of the discussion. For years, the special interests have done everything they can to stop real change; and opponents have continued to argue that climate change doesn’t exist and the science is wrong.

In this important election year, we need to support candidates who believe we need to act now to stop climate change; who see the opportunities presented by the new green economy. I will spend this election year not only fighting for change on the floor of the Senate, but fighting for change in the Senate, electing candidates to Congress who share our dedication to this important fight.

I’m ready to go, but to get our message out, I really need your help today. Your contribution will help me take this message across our state and around the country.

If you think record gas prices and record profits for oil companies mean its time to find new, renewable energy sources and invest in research for cutting-edge technology and more fuel-efficient vehicles, please join me today.

If you believe we can add jobs across our state if we create a new, clean energy economy, please join me today.

If you believe that clean air, land, and water can help, not hinder, economic growth, please join me today.

If you believe that Minnesota’s high environmental standards and innovative clean energy programs can lead our nation forward, please join me today.

Your contribution today will help me take this fight nationwide, spreading our message and building our base, electing new members who will support our efforts, and giving me the resources to continue this fight in the United States Senate.

After 38 years, we’re past the time of dedicating one day a year to saving the Earth. After years of ignorance and inaction, we are on the verge of passing real climate change legislation. With your support, I am confident it’s a debate we can finally win.

Please contribute today, and help me make every day Earth Day.

Dear Friend,

It was 38 years ago yesterday that a small band of concerned citizens joined together to create Earth Day to bring attention to the degradation of our plant. Over the years, interest in our environment has surged and waned. However, our continual decline in natural resources has not.

It is fitting then with all the discussion this week around the environment that the Vote Yes Minnesota Campaign launches its website.

Vote Yes Minnesota is the campaign to support the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment. This amendment will fund the protection of our drinking water sources, enhance and restore our wetlands, prairies, forests, and fish, game and wildlife habitat, preserve our arts and cultural resources, support our parks and trails, and shelter, enhance, and restore our lakes, rivers, streams and groundwater.

Take action now by joining our growing campaign at http://www.Yesfor MN.org.

Right now Minnesota needs your help. Because while we have much to treasure, we also have much to lose. Minnesota’s natural and cultural resources are both critical to maintaining our states high quality of life. Unfortunately, they are also both among the first areas to be cut in times of budget crisis. Funding for our natural resources is at an all time low. There is an urgent need that is not being met and we must act now before the things we love about Minnesota are gone forever.

We can do something to protect the Minnesota we love. The legislature put the Clean Water, Land and Legacy amendment on the ballot this fall for citizens to vote on. It is up to us to protect our drinking water and provide funding for the cleanup of our rivers, lakes and streams. This amendment, the largest in our nations' history, gives us a chance to act now by providing dedicated funding for the next 25 years to preserve our natural resources before they are lost forever.

We need your help in this campaign, please join us in this historic effort at http://www.YesforMN.org.

To paraphrase Margaret Mead, never underestimate that a small group of thoughtful people can change the world, indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has. Many years ago a small group created Earth Day, and now we stand here with an historic opportunity to make sure the things we love about Minnesota are protected and passed on to future generations.

Our campaign looks forward to joining with you and other Minnesotans in this important effort.

Sincerely,

Ken Martin

Our First Ad

Dear Editor,

Our first ad of the presidential campaign hit TVs across the country today, thanks to people like you.

The response from Democrats has been strong and overwhelmingly positive -- many of you are thrilled that we're standing up and fighting John McCain on television while Senator Clinton and Senator Obama work to win the nomination.

The response from Republicans has also been strong, but overwhelmingly negative -- they're frustrated their candidate has such a terrible understanding of economics and that the American people are beginning to find out.

John McCain himself has seen the ad. When he was asked tough questions about his economic plan after seeing it, he became testy and dismissive.

But while the ad starts running on national television today, we're still organizing places like Minnesota, laying the groundwork that Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama will need to win in November. And you can help.

Make a contribution today to help us keep John McCain out of the White House -- we're running ads, organizing volunteers, and building the tools we'll need to win. But it costs money, and we can't afford to wait. Watch our first ad and make a contribution today:

http://www.democrats.org/support

Help us continue asking the tough questions of John McCain. We want to make sure Americans hear John McCain in his own words -- on the air and at their door.

Thanks for all you do.

Dear Editor,

John McCain believes we're better off economically today than we were eight years ago.

The American people know that's not true -- they're feeling the effects of high gas prices, lost jobs, and a housing crisis. Voters continually rank the economy as their biggest concern.

So this week we're planning to release our first national television ad of the presidential race to show the American people just how wrong John McCain is on the economy. We're also strengthening our local organizing efforts to make sure the American people really know how little John McCain understands the economy.

We need $500,000 to help pay for ads like the one we plan to air this week, fund organizers in your state and build a national infrastructure to help Hillary or Barack win the White House.

Can you help us raise $500,000? If you can, then millions of Americans will get to see and hear the real John McCain in his own words -- and we'll be building for victory in November.

http://www.democrats.org/support

John McCain is on the record as saying the economy is something he really doesn't understand as well as he should. It shows.

Unemployment is up. Gas and food prices are up. Inflation is on the rise. The housing market is in a slump. The pundits are saying we're in the worst economic mess in decades. But John McCain keeps defending his friend George Bush, saying everything is just fine.

Providing tax cuts for the wealthy, allowing oil and gas companies to make huge windfall profits and turning a blind eye to the problems in the home lending market -- these are John McCain's solutions. American families can't afford four more years of failed Bush economic policies.

Your support today allows us to get this spot on the air across the country. We want to do this right -- please take a moment now to watch the ad and then make a contribution:

http://www.democrats.org/support

John McCain and the Republican Party hope we'll forget about the mismanagement of the last eight years. They're working hard to distract Americans from getting to know the real John McCain, and the Republican spin machine is working overtime.

While John McCain is out trying to reintroduce himself to the American people, we want to make sure voters have all the facts -- and have the chance to know the real John McCain.

Your support to help us raise $500,000 means we can start distributing the ad on national television this week, while putting additional resources into our 50-state strategy.

We'll make sure Americans hear John McCain in his own words. And the more we raise, the more voters we can reach with this and other spots.

Thanks for your support,

Howard Dean
