Town Hall Meeting on Fire Sprinkler Requirements

Join Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry Commissioner Steve Sviggum for a town hall meeting on fire sprinkler requirements in all new single family and multi-family residences. This was recently voted upon by the International Code Council to be added to the 2009 International Residential Code (IRC). While the new IRC code goes into effect in 2009, the fire sprinkler mandate does not go into effect until Jan. 1, 2011.
The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) estimated that in 2005, requiring a sprinkler system in every residential dwelling would cost $5.8 billion. Sprinkler costs vary depending on the climate, whether the house is on a public water line, and of course by the size and layout of the house. A conservative cost of $2 per square foot for the average 2,400-square-foot house means that a residential fire sprinkler system would cost $4,800. Survey results show that only 15 percent of consumers in the sample would be willing to pay that much.
Sviggum was appointed Commissioner in July 2007 by Governor Tim Pawlenty. In this role, Sviggum leads Minnesota’s effort to protect the health, safety, and protection of Minnesota’s workers and employers.

Monday’s meeting topic is “USS Ward at Pearl Harbor”. Dick Klobuchar, our Historian, is a Rochester resident, and has published two books on Pearl Harbor ( The USS Ward: An Operational History of the Ship That Fired the First American Shot of WWII, as well as Pearl Harbor: Awakening of a Sleeping Giant ). The USS Ward was manned mostly by Minnesota servicemen, and sunk a Japanese midget submarine at the entrance to Pearl Harbor one hour before Japanese planes attacked the American fleet on December 7, 1941. Three Minnesota veterans who were on the USS Ward when America’s first shot of WWII were fired will also speak at the program. They are Dick Thill, Donald Pepin, and Kenneth Swedberg.

RColorful Corners Needs You!

front of Hawthorne Literacy Center
On June 16, at 8 am, neighbors will work together in the South East
neighborhood to paint a mural on the street. We welcome all who are
artistic, and those who aren't, to join in the fun. You don't even
need to be from the SE neighborhood to help out.
The painting will take place at an intersection in front of Hawthorne
Literacy Center (5th Avenue & 7th Street SE).
Why paint on the street?
Without spending a single tax dollar, this grassroots project creates
a safer and more livable neighborhood by encouraging walking, biking,
and visiting around this asset.
The paint was donated and is street paint (like the kind used to paint
lines on roads). A non-skid additive will be mixed in to ensure
additional safety to motorists and pedestrians. Local mural artist
Greg Wimmer will be hard at work early in the morning to chalk out the
image for volunteers to paint.
Free t-shirts will be provided for the first 100 people present
compliments of Yaggy Colby, Weiss Builders, and Sixta Insurance. There
will be fun activities for children and a free lunch served at noon.
If the weather is rainy on June 16, then the project will be bumped
back until the following Saturday, June 23.

In June 2006 more than 300 women attended the first Power of the Purse
Luncheon and bid on close to 70 handbags in a silent auction.
Afterwards, keynote speaker Kathleen Kennedy Townsend
commented, "There was a wonderful spirit in the room and there was a
determination to help others."
The luncheon, auction, WoW memberships, and a matching grant from Andy
Chafoulias raised more than $38,500 to support the United Way
partnership with Imagination Library.
Guests left energized; excited, and talking about "next year." And so
were WoW members.

Description: This family-oriented scavenger hunt, activity race is
based on the reality show, "Amazing Race". Teams work together to
solve clues to reach destinations or legs. At each leg, teams receive
clues for the next leg; some legs involve completing a task or a
cooperative challenge.

older. The event will begin with check-in and orientation at the

RColorful Corners Needs You!

On June 16, at 8 am, neighbors will work together in the South East
neighborhood to paint a mural on the street. We welcome all who are
artistic, and those who aren't, to join in the fun. You don't even
need to be from the SE neighborhood to help out.
The painting will take place at an intersection in front of Hawthorne
Literacy Center (5th Avenue & 7th Street SE).
Why paint on the street?
Without spending a single tax dollar, this grassroots project creates
a safer and more livable neighborhood by encouraging walking, biking,
and visiting around this asset.
The paint was donated and is street paint (like the kind used to paint
lines on roads). A non-skid additive will be mixed in to ensure
additional saftey to motorists and pedestrians. Local mural artist
Greg Wimmer will be hard at work early in the morning to chalk out the
image for volunteers to paint.
Free t-shirts will be provided for the first 100 people present
compliments of Yaggy Colby, Weiss Builders, and Sixta Insurance. There
will be fun activities for children and a free lunch served at noon.
If the weather is rainy on June 16, then the project will be bumped
back until the following Saturday, June 23.

In June 2006 more than 300 women attended the first Power of the Purse
Luncheon and bid on close to 70 handbags in a silent auction.
Afterwards, keynote speaker Kathleen Kennedy Townsend
commented, "There was a wonderful spirit in the room and there was a
determination to help others."
The luncheon, auction, WoW memberships, and a matching grant from Andy
Chafoulias raised more than $38,500 to support the United Way
partnership with Imagination Library.
Guests left energized; excited, and talking about "next year." And so
were WoW members.

and how do all involved collaborate? Do citizens have opportunities to
give input into plans?
If these are questions you have, then this Coffee and Conversations is
for you.
There are many plans underway that will transform our downtown:
expanding the Civic Center, a UMN campus, new apartments, changing the
streetscapes, adding retail space and a biotechnology center.
After everyone has their coffee, the morning will start off with Doug
Knott, Downtown Development Administrator, giving an overview of the
current downtown plans. Representatives of the city, downtown
organizations, businesses, commissions, and non-profits will be
invited to share information about current and future downtown
development. Local elected officials will be invited to hear your
thoughts about what is needed in our downtown.
Businesses and organizations involved in the evolving plans for
downtown Rochester will be invited to set up displays in the Rotunda,
available before and after the forum.
This forum is free and open to the public. This is an opportunity to
be part of the democratic process and share views on issues facing our
state and community.

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED - pronounced sep-
ted)
CPTED is a crime control philosophy that attempts to apply physical
design, citizen participation and law enforcement strategies in a
comprehensive way to protect facilities or neighborhoods. The goal of
CPTED is to reduce the opportunity for crime to occur. It is a series
of design principles that, when properly employed, serve to eliminate
criminal behavior and improve the quality of life through the
reduction of fear of crime. This reduction in criminal opportunities
is achieved by employing physical design features and space management
strategies that discourage criminal activity, while at the same time
encouraging the legitimate use of the location.
After a short classroom introduction at 6:30 PM, there will be a
walking tour of the immediate community to illustrate the concepts of
CPTED. Participants will be looking at the architecture, landscaping
and lighting of the residential area.

protagonists in this 'global' comedy are: a family of Mongolian
nomads, a camel caravan of Tuareg in the Sahara, and a group of Indios

global scale we will be examining the big picture of renewable energy,
the new national and state laws and policies being implemented now and
in the future. On the local level RPU will share about renewable
energy that is impacting us now, renewable energy that is on the
horizon, as well as what we can do to conserve energy in our every day
lives.

Here is a community events list for March.
This month there is a program for the 4th anniversary of the Iraq War on
March 17. It is Channel One Food month and the Olmsted County DFL will be collecting food at
the DFL office on Tuesdays from 2:00PM - 6:00PM and also at our
monthly DFL meeting. The Olmsted County DFL continues to help picket
for the Holiday Inn workers that were fired on Thursday evenings from
5-7 in front of the Holiday Inn downtown.
For a fun event, I recommend the Art Center opening March 10. There
will be an opening reception for an art exhibit from our sister city
Siheung City, Korea.

In October 2006 Rochester, Minnesota and Siheung City, South Korea
agreed to establish a Partner City relationship to promote cultural
understanding between the two cities. Rochester and Siheung City vowed
to support and promote the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and goodwill.
To help strengthen this partnership, the two cities are collaborating
on an exhibition of artwork from Siheung to be shown at the Rochester
Art Center from March 10 to April 29 called The Art of Siheung City,
Korea: Celebrating Rochester’s Partner City.
The Art of Siheung City will feature works by artists living and
working in Siheung. The works include calligraphy, sculpture,
traditional Korean painting, and western-style paintings of landscape,
still life, and abstract subjects. Nine of the exhibiting artists as
well as several city officials from Siheung will be traveling to
Rochester for the opening of the exhibition on March 10.
Rochester Art Center offers special thanks to the Rochester Downtown
Alliance for its support of this exhibition.
